ENGN Review

October 2, 2017 By Editor

ENGN Review

ENGN is a pre-workout supplement made by Evlution Nutrition.

It’s a multi-ingredient formula, which is designed to improve all aspects of your workouts.

Evlution Nutrition is an American supplement company, which was founded in 2013.

Ingredients Label

Active Ingredients

Beta Alanine

Beta alanine is classed as a “beta-amino acid”.

It delays fatigue by increasing levels of carnosine in the body.

Intense exercise causes a build-up of acid and free-radicals, which carnosine counteracts (1).

The effective dose is 2-5g daily.

Creatine

Creatine is an organic acid, which improves energy production.

A large body of research has found it to consistently improve power output in athletes (2).

ENGN contains the well-studied monohydrate version, as well as another form containing magnesium, which may provide additional benefits.

Betaine

Betaine, or trimethylglycine, is a naturally-occurring compound found in sugar beets.

Research so far shows that it may increase power output and improve muscle mass (3).

An effective dose is around 2.5g.

Choline Bitartrate

Choline is a vitamin that supports brain health.

Research has shown that those who consume more choline in their diets show better mental performance (4).

Bitartrate is a cheaper form of choline, which may not be as effective as others.

Tyrosine

Tyrosine is an anti-stress compound.

It works by reducing the production of stress hormones, which can improve performance under stress or fatigue (5).

The effective dose is about 500-2,000mg.

Caffeine

We’re all familiar with caffeine, the world’s most-loved stimulant.

It increases energy and alertness, but at higher doses it can also improve athletic performance (6).

ENGN also includes dicaffeine malate, which is a slower-releasing form.

An effective dose can range between 200-500mg.

Agmatine

Agmatine is a nitric-oxide booster.

Nitric oxide can cause vasodilation – a widening of the blood vessels. This can improve blood flow, endurance, and pumps (7).

It may also be able to reduce stress and improve mood.

Alpha GPC

Alpha GPC is another form of choline.

Although it can improve brain function, it’s most powerful effects may be improving power output (8).

An effective dose is around 600mg.

Huperzine-A

Huperzine-A is another brain-boosting compound, which can improve memory and focus.

It works by reducing the break-down of the learning neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (9).

50-200 micrograms is an effective dose.

Who Takes It?

Athletes wanting to improve all aspects of their workout may benefit from using ENGN.

How to Take

Mix 1 scoop (8g) with 250mL water, and consume 30-60 minutes before working out.

Side Effects

Creatine may cause an increase in water weight, and may upset the stomach if taken without sufficient water.

Beta alanine can cause a tingling sensation in the face and skin.

Caffeine can trigger anxiety or irregular heartbeat if taken in excessive quantities.

Pros

  • A range of ingredients for improving all aspects of your workouts
  • Multiple flavour options
  • Caffeine-free version available.

Cons

  • Some ingredient doses are hidden in proprietary blends
  • Inadequate doses of some ingredients.

Conclusion

ENGN is a pre-workout supplement that contains ingredients for a whole range of benefits to your workouts.

It’s most likely to excel in the areas of focus and power output, but may lack for improving pumps and endurance effects.

Unfortunately many of the ingredients are likely under-dosed, but taking two scoops at a time may make up for this – as long as you can tolerate the extra caffeine!

A caffeine-free version is also available for those who enjoy late-night workouts.
