Ripped Black is a fat burner by Horleys, a trusted brand created in New Zealand way back in 1976.
It aims to improve body composition via raising metabolic rate and fat oxidation, as well as enhancing mental focus.
Green Tea Extract
Green Tea and its extracts have long been used for fat-burning effects. Studies show that it can increases fat oxidation by 17% compared to placebo (1), as well as improving insulin sensitivity.
An effective dose for fat-burning is 400-500mg.
Guarana, like coffee beans, is a good source of caffeine.
An effective dose is about 200-500mg, and varies with an individual’s tolerance.
Green Coffee Bean
Green Coffee Bean Extract is a source of Chlorogenic Acid, which has shown to improve heart health and promote fat loss (4).
The recommended dosage is 240-3,000mg, depending on the strength of the extract.
Yerba Mate is a plant whose leaves have traditionally been brewed for tea.
These leaves contain Quercitin, a bioflavinoid which increases the bioavailability of Green Tea Catechins. This allows even greater increases in fat oxidation than using Green Tea on its own (5).
It also contains caffeine.
An effective dose for stimulation on its own is 1,000-1,500mg, however less than this may be effective for boosting the effects of Green Tea.
White willow refers to a bark extract from the Willow Tree, which has a similar effect to aspirin (6).
It is not very well-researched, but in theory it would prolong the thermogenic effects of other ingredients.
Garcinia Quaesita is a plant native to Indonesia. It is closely related to Garcinia Cambogia.
The plant’s fruit is a natural source of Hydroxycitric Acid, which has a small and unreliable weight loss effect in humans (7).
The standard dose is about 2-3g of dried fruit (8).
Bitter Orange is a pomelo/mandarin hybrid, which contains a compound called Synephrine.
It is used to aid weight loss and suppress appetite.
Studies have shown it to increase resting metabolic rate and energy expenditure, with results being best seen over 6-12 weeks of supplementation (9).
The recommended dose is 10-20mg of Synephrine, 3 times daily.
The pigments in Capsicum (carotenoids) vegetables have been discovered to affect the metabolism of other compounds (10).
This means certain compounds will be absorbed by the body in greater amounts than usual.
The effective dose has not been established.
Chromium is an essential mineral. This means our bodies need it to survive.
The effective dose is 500-1,000mg daily.
L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that decreases stress hormone production, and improves both mood and performance under stressful conditions (13).
A standard dose is 500-2,000mg, taken 30-60 minutes before performance.
Who Takes It?
Ripped Black is suited towards anyone wishing to improve their fat loss, mood, and workout effectiveness while dieting.
How to Take
For fat loss, take 2 capsules upon waking, and 1 capsule pre-workout.
Do not exceed 3 capsules in a 24 hour period.
White willow may be stressful to the kidneys in high doses – do not take if you have pre-existing kidney damage.
Capsicum Carotenoids can interfere with other medication. Do not take Ripped Black alongside any other pharmaceuticals.
- A somewhat natural formula, with minimal side effects.
- Low in stimulants – just 100mg of Caffeine per capsule. This could be a positive for those who prefer less stimulants, but comes at the expense of some fat-burning power
- A large portion of the ingredients are not present in large enough amounts
Horleys has a rather tame formula with Ripped Black.
The ingredients are mostly natural and safe, however it doesn’t look like a very strong formula for fat loss compared to other products.
It will assist fat loss, but not in great amounts. It also doesn’t have much Tyrosine in it, which means it might not improve focus much, if at all.
